Could it be the "Sent" sound from Mail? That sort of sounds like something flying overhead.

What kind of laptop is it? It may be initialising the optical drive when it comes out of sleep with a sort of "woo-ee-rrrrrrrrr" noise. It's perfectly normal.

Go into the System folder (immediately visible when you open the hard drive), then the Library folder, then the Sounds folder. It might be "Hero," if Apple still installs it.

You can control the sounds in Apple's Mail program by making sure Mail is running, going into the Preferences under Mail in the menu bar, and clicking on General. It's the third control down the list.
