Firefox and Safari are both constantly crashing. Firefox wont even open the home page. Safari will at least open some pages, but crashes eventually. Firefox won't load anything. i tried resetting safari, no help. I uninstalled and re-installed a fresh version of firefox and nothing changed. Any ideas? I ran a permissions repair as well.

Maybe there are multi-linked files or something else gone awry. Restart the machine and hold down the Command/Apple key and the S key, and hold them down until text starts to flow. That starts the machine in single-user mode.

After the text stops flowing, the cursor will be at the bottom, at the prompt. Type in

fsck -fy

including the space, then hit the Return key. This is the same as running the disk utility.

If, after the machine finishes the run, the message says the disk has been modified or fixed, run fsck -fy again, and keep running it until the message says the volume appears to be OK.

Then type exit or type reboot and hit return.

fsck means files check. -f means force check (because the OS is journaled). y means yes — don't ask each time whether I want each repair made.

Have you tried trashing the preferences folder in your home directory's library?

Is this on 10.4 or 10.5?
If on 10.5, what type of install did you do?

FYI: After simple upgrade to 10.5 on one machine, Safari crashed while opening, Firefox crashed pretty quickly after opening, while Opera was working for the 30 minutes until I blew it away and did an E&I.
