do you have a lot of items, especially folders, on the desktop?
do you have a lot of widgets on your dashboard?
do you have a lot of start up items?
is there anything you've downloaded recently that could be suspect?
did you restart a couple times after using onyx (the first start after cache cleannig can actually be slower)? subsequent startups should be faster.
