These things are soooo expensive!! Especially for what you're getting. Does anyone know of a suitable retrofit other than USB? I have seen the powerbook drives that perform better than the stock Imacs but I am not sure if they fit.

MCE Technology (www.mcetech.com) sells a dvd-ram/rw drive to replace the drive. It's not cheap - $379 - but it is a significant upgrade and it's compatible with the Apple software. I replaced the cd drive in my 333 iMac with an MCE CD-RW about 2 years ago and it has worked flawlessly. Otherwise try some of the used parts dealers like Shreve or Sun.
