If so, how do they sound?

I'm sure I read a review somewhere which said they weren't very good qith 128kbps music files. I want them to play music, TV and DVDs through a Mac mini in my living room (doesn't have to be too loud, just reasonable).

Thanks.

I don't know what the differences are but I have the 2.1s.
They've worked great for me for several years now. Like you said, not looking for volume but quality.

I have them hooked through a Griffin iMic to my iMac.

I love mine. They are the Promedia 2.1's with the black grills. Quite loud for computer usage and great sound again for computer speakers. Using mine on my iMac G5 and they sound good enough that I rarely run my front room stereo lately.
