"It Changes" from the movie Snoopy, Come Home, which is probably the saddest movie ever, despite the ultra-happy ending...

Mad World. It's the song I was playing when I tried to top myself last.

Mad World.

and anything by Elliott Smith (even before he died).

elliott smith - fond farewell

the litebrite's now black and white
cause you took apart a picture that wasn't right
pitch burning on a shining sheet
the only maker that you want to meet
a dying man in a living room
who's shadow paces the floor
who'll take you out in the open door
this is not my life
it's just a fond farewell to a friend
it's not what i'm like
it's just a fond farewell to a friend
who couldn't get things right
fond farewell to a friend
he said really i just wanna dance
good and evil matched perfect it's a great romance
i can deal with some psychic pain
if it'll slow down my higher brain
veins full of disappearing ink
vomiting in the kitchen sink
disconnecting from the missing link
this is not my life
it's just a fond farewell to a friend
it's not what i'm like
it's just a fond farewell to a friend
who couldn't get things right
fond farewell to a friend
i see you're leaving me and taking up with the enemy
the cold comfort of the in between
a little less than a human being
a little less than a happy high
a little less than a suicide
the only things that you really tried

Who you'd be today - Kenny Chesney.

Sunny days seem to hurt the most
I wear the pain like a heavy coat
I feel you everywhere I go
I see your smile, I see your face
I hear you laughing in the rain
I still can't believe you're gone

It ain't fair you died too young
Like a story that had just begun
But death tore the pages all away
God knows how I miss you
All the **** that I've been through
Just knowing no one could take your place
Sometimes I wonder who you'd be today

Would you see the world, would you chase your dreams
Settle down with a family
I wonder what would you name your babies
Some days the sky's so blue
I feel like I can talk to you
I know it might sound crazy

It ain't fair you died too young
Like a story that had just begun
But death tore the pages all away
God knows how I miss you
All the **** that I've been through
Just knowing no one could take your place
Sometimes I wonder who you'd be today

Today, today, today
Today, today, today

Sunny days seem to hurt the most
I wear the pain like a heavy coat
The only thing that gives me hope
Is I know I'll see you again someday

Someday, someday

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but...I can't believe I forgot the most obvious one...

For me, personally, probably "This Song Wants To Sleep With You Tonight" by Brian Wilson. It's a great tune, with a really cool production, but there were some past (temporary) experiences that just make it lyrically unlistenable for me...I haven't been able to listen to it in over ten years. :(

Sure a few come to mind here but the two that stick out to me is:

Two Beds And A Coffee Machine
Savage Garden

It's about Wife abuse.
Such a sad song.

Billy Joel

The result/answer to his Daughter's (Alexa) question to him. And it was something like "what happens to us all when we die?"

The World/Inferno Friendship Society - Friend to the Friendless
Youtube Link

I believe this song speaks for itself. *Real life* and how easily it can be turned upside down and backwards.

I'm not above drinking alone
but no good ever comes of it,
unless you count me talking to you now
So, have you been hurt?
Did you hurt someone?
Did you get all crashed down upon?
Me, I'm a friend to the friendless
not that I chose it and if I had
well then who knows?
But that one guy on the train
all talking to himself
ah, he's talking to me
He's saying
"At school they taught me a prayer for money,
a prayer for crap jobs right till I die
never a prayer for people, the brokenhearted
the lonely"

Did you let the blues make you bad
Did you get all twisted?
Did you get so drunk you whispered
"I think I'm gonna die?"
Did you pass nights wondering why you never saw it coming?
Nobody ever sees it coming, no exceptions at all
I'm a friend to the friendless and I don't care
If I had a choice in this it wouldn't be fair
but I don't so let's not get all carried away
with **** you wouldn't change anyway
let's make this a prayer for money
a prayer for Sundays through Mondays
and crap jobs right til I die.
Because where we are we won't always be
and **** man that could be me
getting hurt, hurting someone
getting all crashed down upon
burning holes in butterfly's wings
while wishing just wishing for other things
Nobody ever sees it coming, no exceptions at all
Nobody ever sees it coming, are you ready for this?
Never wear white socks with black shoes
Don't get all twisted
Don't let the blues make you bad
I know you miss him
Don't let your standards fall down with your hair
How it felt when you kissed her
Straighten your tie, tuck in your shirt
I'm a friend to the friendless
And I don't know why but come on kids, please,
we'll walk right on by
I know you are lonely, you'll not always be
You are so many things you will not always be.

Ralph McTell "Terminus" - leaving a love when life leads us in another direction. It happened to me at airports, but the sentiments are all the same.

Wow. I'm surprised to not have seen Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven."
