• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Hey guys,

I have been sent a rather long avi file of a wedding from the UK of my family. I want to watch it but I don't have any sound, I figured it was just that my brother converted the film wrong but it works on my friends Windows machine. How can I find out what codecs I need? Is there a program that I can use that I can open the file in and it will tell me what audio codecs I need. I have tried a few players I have great picture but no sound.

Any ideas?

Not sure what codec you may need, but have you tried different media players? Quicktime, VLC, mPlayer, etc?

VLC Player is the one you need. You can open the specific media file in VLC and hit "Command + I"(alternatively Window > Information > Advanced Information), will give you all the information about the streams (audio and video), even if it can't play.
