Thanks for the darwin ports reminder; I'd forgotten about this (and am building nethack as I type!).
I don't remember if you need to install XCode to get the unix tools such as perl and python (as installing XCode is one of the first things I do when I get a new machine), but you do if you want gcc. You can download the latest X11 build (as well as the latest XCode and gcc build) from Apple's website. XCode requires a developer account (which is free, and gives you access to loads of documentation).
