keyboard not responding after Panther install

Help!

After installing the first Panther disk, the keyboard wouldn't respond at all.

Even to get the disk out I had to re-start the machine and keep the mouse pressed.

Trouble is, I have a password to log in, but I simply cannot type it in! I have already checked (and changed) the keyboard connection, but the problem persists.

Also have tried to boot it in the single-user mode, but no response from the keyboard on that one as well (although it did go into single-user mode, which means it recognized the command+S keys pressed).

Anyone with clues on this one?

Most thankful.

Have you tried the reboot with the keyboard connected to a different USB port? Or, if possible. a borrowed keyboard?
