512 MB is a bit slim - you likely want to upgrade to 1GB to get the best performance from that MBP.

512mb of ram will not be enough for video editing and maybe some more demanding effects in photoshop

Congrats with your purchase :)

Definitely upgrade to at least 1GB of RAM. A lot of the time you can find deals at newegg.com or such sites that sell 2GB RAM for pretty cheap in 2x1GB configurations.

Ok I understand that the Core 2 Duo MBPs come with one stick of 512. I bought my MBP as a Core Duo back in August last year, does it come with 2x256? I am upgrading my ram also and am just curious. They System Profiler didn't say anything.

If you select the More Info... button and select Memory in th eHardware section it should tell you exatly how many slots and what's in them.

You are far better off with matched sizes as then you get parallel memory access speeds which can make a huge difference (like 40% increase in performance for some games).

I guess this means I only have one stick of 512Mb?

Looks like it. If two slots are being used it should say DIMM1, and DIMM2

It's best to buy them in matched pairs so that you can take advantage of the dual-channel configuration which will yield better performance. I'm bummed right now because my MBP-CD came with a single 1GB module and according to just about every retailer I've asked, there's no way of making an exact match - even if you buy directly from Apple. I was hoping not to have to replace the existing module. Oh well...

So if I buy a 2Gb stick to replace one of my 1Gb sticks in my MBP it will lower performance in some ways?

Thanks. Well, I guess I'm not buying that 2G stick. :)

I dont think your MB pro would be able to address that much memory on the one stick (2Gb)
