Remote Desktop Mac mini

i have an xp laptop that i am not ready to get rid of and am considering buying a macmini to place under the tv, my intent is to use my laptop by wifi connection as my mac minis keyboard and screen by remote desktop, this will allow me also to run my windows software at the same time.
my question is simply, is this possible, if i hook up my mac mini under the tv what software will i need to acheive the above over wifi directly between computers not the internet as i will be in my home with my laptop.
