HD upgrade.

I'm tinkering about having a 160gb HD isntalled (professionally from a mac authorized center), due to the fact that with being mobile, I HATE having to carry around an external drive as well.

I can only find them with speeds of 5400, does anyone know if there's a 160gb 7200rpm drive available anywhere?

Also, am I forced to pay nearly $600 for a 2gb stick of ram? (also, is it possible for me to place 2 2gb cards in there and have a total 4gb of ram?

I think the largest 7200RPM laptop drive is 100GB. MacBook Pros only see 3GB of RAM. So buying 2 2GB sticks wouldn't be worth it.

You don't have to buy RAM from Apple. Shop around, you may find a better price.

No one knows what will happen if you stick 2x2GB in a machine as the motherboard only supports upto 3GB on MBP C2D.

Not sure about the HD I am looking too, but I can find any bigger than 120 at the mo' but I am sure its out there.

Don't buy ram from Apple its way over priced.. Try www.newegg.com

i searched newegg and couldnt find any sticks of 2gb ram. I did however find this, and the price seems pretty high

not sure why there's a $400 difference between a 1gb and 2gb stick or ram.

Will I notice that much of a difference between the two HD speeds? (5400 and 7200?) The macbook itself comes with a 5400rpm HD right?

the short answer is NO it will not make that big of a difference when it comes to speed. Yes all macbooks come with a 5400rpm hd.

I just saw an Apple technote Sunday that said what happens when you put 2 2GB sticks into a Mac BooK Pro C2D. It clearly stated it won't do any harm, but the system will only see up to 3Gb. The limit is due to the Intel memory controller that is used.

Indeed, I can confirm this. I helped develop the Core2Duo processor and corresponding chipset at Intel. This will be remedied quite soon in upcoming versions...

The processor and operating system is known to support at least 4GB of ram. So it would be nice to give it a try.

As far as hard drive speed goes, it doesn't make a difference with large amounts of ram. If you only had 1gb, you might notice more than 2 with 2gb of ram. Most speed increase is for seeking, not writing.
