External HHD Format

I have an external hard drive that Iused to use on a Windows machine, so there is all sorts of Windows crud on it, like system files that refuse to be deleted, etc. Is there a way in OSX to reformat it in Apple format and start over? thanks!!

Sure. Connect it either via USB or FW and use the Disk Utility from Applications/Utilities to format it. (Warning: Make sure to select the correct HDD)

Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Both should be fine.
