I just use the 'create archive' feature built into OS X...

Just <control> click on the file in the Finder (or right click), choose Create Archive. Done! All zipped up!

The vast majority of archived files are cross-platform, so yes, you don't have to worry about a Windows user not being able to open the file.

However, one thing you should keep in mind is that some people may not have the appropriate software to open certain archived files, such as .rar and .tar so you should stick with something like .zip.

wow.. that's a super fast response to help
thanx : )

i just tried zipping with Mac OS "Create archive" function
but i realised that there is merely about 19% reduction in folder size
i.e. 1.33GB from 1.64GB

is there any way to improve this efficiency??

Don't take this the wrong way, bu just so you know for the future, that is probably the worst way to search. You can narrow your search much more by using the Search Function of the forum. Let it do the work for you, so you don't have to physically sift through page after page of threads.

You can use zip inside of terminal (and you don't really need to know any Unix) with an option that will create smaller archives. If you bring up a Terminal window (under Applications -> Utilities), type the following:

zip -9 archive.zip

Before hitting return, go to your finder window and drag the folder you want to compress onto the terminal window. That will put the full path of the folder into the command above, and you should end up with something that looks like:

zip -9 archive.zip /Users/your_name/some/folder/

Hit return, and in a moment you'll have a new archive under your home directory. It should be smaller than the zip file you ended up with before, although it may not be significant depending on what you're storing.

thank you for all the help : )

will remember to use the search function available as a tab near to the top of the page .. i remember that i did try to look for search function and how can i miss that??????

thank you for that tip to create a smaller archive, djames42
but tried doing it by following your instructions which turned out unsuccessful .. got the following error message

zip error: Nothing to do! (archive.zip/Users/your_name/some/folder.zip)

what did i do wrong??
is there a space between zip and -9 and between -9 and archive?

i tried using Stuffit Standard 8.0.2 dropZip (trial version) to compress the same folder and
it ended up being bigger .. 1.43GB from 1.64GB instead of 1.33GB using Mac OS "create archive" function ..
is it because my version is trial version??
or is this compression ratio the norm??

GOD bless!! n Cheers (",)
