I have a Maxtor 300 gigabyte harddrive that I used to use with my Dell Inspiron XPS. I recently switched to a macbook (by the way, I love this thing to death) and when I connected the harddrive via firewire 400 it wont let me write onto the harddrive now. It says read only in the info area and I'm not sure how to change that to read & write. Please help

G'day phaze117 & welcome to Mac-Forum.

Seems like you need to reformat your drive. Presently it must be formatted NTFS, which would account for your MacBook only having read privileges.

You will need to format the HD FAT32 if you are going to use it as an external and want to be able to read/write.

Am I correct in assuming you want to use the Maxtor as an external HD?

This quote:

MSDOS
Mac OS X includes support for MSDOS filesystem (FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32)

NTFS
Mac OS X includes read-only support for NTFS

Came from this website:

Mac OS X Filesystems
