according to my istat pro widget.. my CPU A often reaches 79C is this a bad thing or normal..... it just seems relatively high

It is pretty high, but it depends on what you're doing. There are two situations where your macbook would get that hot:

1) you are doing something CPU intensive
2) you are blocking the ventilation ports somehow

If you're doing neither of these things, check your CPU usage. If it's more than about 3% when idle, then something is eating your CPU time and raising your temperature. If it's on a cushion, blanket or anything other than a hard surface, try raising it and seeing how it goes.
