psychedelic screen failiure

A problem which is becoming more frequent with my Intel MacBook pro is that the screen suddenly goes dark, and then colours start to slowly spread up from bottom left and down from top right, purple from the bottom and green from the top until they meet in the middle and the screen goes black again. I have to restart to get the screen up again. This only seems to happen when i have my external Apple LCD screen connected. Pretty irritating.
