Formating my MBP

What are the steps that should be taken to format my MBP?

It should have come formatted with the OS installed already. There really shouldn't be any reason for you to reformat or reinstall the OS.
Why do you need to format it?

Anyway, you can just use the install media that came with the notebook to format and wipe the drive. Just boot from the disc and follow the steps.

What happened? Are you having any trouble with the computer?
Like I mentioned, there really shouldn't be any reason (and rarely ever is) to reinstall the OS.
We could probably help you with your issue, which would save you the hassle.

trying to dual boot, xp and osx

I am unable to partition the drive for the XP system files.

When verifying my disk it says it needs a repair, for numerous red text things.

repair wont work.. greyed out...

Insert your restore disc, click restart and hold the 'D' key down. Open the 'Disk Utility and 'Erase' the drive, name it what you will then it should partition and you should be set to install a clean operating system.

I am guessing the restore disc is the install discs???

Yes, use the OSX DVD that came with your machine. ...and it's not the 'D' key you need to hold as your machine reboots, it's the 'C' key -- that will tell your machine to boot off the optical drive. Alternately, just pop the DVD in and double-click the installer; it will automatically force a reboot from the DVD. Disk Utility should be under the 'Utilites' menu that shows up when the installer starts up after the reboot.

Sorry to hear that you've got to do a reinstall to get your machine to partition. The upshot is that you can now selectively install only the printer drivers and languages that you need. That will probably give you a gig or so of extra space, as Apple's default install puts every driver and language in.

and just to be clear.
shut down computer.
start up , hold C
Then it after it has come to some kind of menu pop in the dvd?
then i will have a option to install do so
and its reformated?
