Am I right in thinking the lid on the MBP has an actual latch instead of the MB with the magnetic latch?

Yes, it has an actual latch

Stick your face right infront of the release on the front and slowly close the lid, you'll notice when the lid is about 1cm from closing 2 hooks will pop out from either side of the camera

Why would they not put a magnetic latch on the MBP? Is it space?

nah, they probably save 5cents/unit by doing that.

there are still magnets in the base though, to pull the latches down when they get close enough. go figure.
