I really want to connect my ipod physically to my car stereo. I have been looking around but can't really find a good source for any info on the subject. I have a 2002 Jeep liberty and I wanted to know what kind of control the stereo would have over the ipod and if I would need to purchase a new unit.

Has anyone done this? Do you like it? Was it worth it?

thanks

I have my iPod hardwired into the back of my stereo in my car. It all depends on the stereo if you can do that. Most factory stereos are starting to be able to do that, but not all. If you have a CD-Changer, that is not built into the head unit itself(its under a seat, or in the trunk) then you can most likely do it. If not, you'll have to buy an aftermark stereo, and run it into the aux input.

Just a suggestion. My wife owns a Honda Pilot, and was able to find a support forum, just like this is a support forum for people with Macs. On that forum, she was able to find detailed instructions for how to hardwire her iPod into the stereo. She followed them, and it works like a champ.

Perhaps you could do the same thing - find a Jeep Liberty support forum and hunt around - I bet somebody may have done this already!

I quickly Googled "jeep liberty forum" and here are just a few of the results that came back:

http://www.jeepkj.com/
http://jeepsunlimited.com/forums/
http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/jeep-liberty

Happy hunting - I bet you can find a "recipe" for connecting up an iPod in there (or the other forums Google shows up) somewhere!

I have the USA Spec ipod connection kit in my Chevy Silverado. It plugged right into my factory stereo and it is controlled by the CD changer controls that were already built into the radio. I am able to name the playlists like GM1_classic rock and it reads them no problem. YOu can also flick a switch on the control unit (which is hidden under the center console) and control it through the ipod. That is a little distracing to me though. Check www.crutchfield.com they sell them and you can enter your car model and they will tell you exactly what fits. The unit I have cost about $100.

Looks like Crutchfield has this Harmon Kardon unit on sale for the Liberty....

call up your local car/audio place in town. they can do a wireless FM transmitter for $100 usually and in most cases it has great reception with no issues..
