I use Shapeshifter to run custom themes. Most of the time I'm using custom icons.

i don't run any extra software.

i've only done the following:
  • change the wallpaper from time to time of course
  • modified the time in my menu bar to read (as an example): Sat 20/Jan/2007 19:41
  • dock moved to the left and dock items changed to suit me, icons made much smaller
  • desktop items made smaller with text to the left
  • "applications" folder added to quick launch area of the finder window
  • "to archive" folder that resides on desktop also added to that area of the finder window
  • most finder windows altered to show list view.
  • my cell phone number has also been added to the login screen (if lost call: 612.###.####)

Download the free utility OnyX, making sure you have the correct version for your OS (Tiger, Panther, or Jaguar). After installing OnyX to Macintosh HD/Applications, launch OnyX. Go to the Appearance/Login tab. Enable "Show message in the login window" and in the text box enter an e-mail address & phone #, again without revealing your login name, ie: "Property of a.smith(at)abc.com 123-456-7890" Now this info will show at login as well.

How do you clear the background of your dock?

I've kept everything as default, except the Adobe Acrobat icons. I've changed those to the v7 versions as the new ones are so naff as to ruin the look of my dock!

Photoshop CS3 beta has the same look - so it looks like all the CS3 applications will suffer the same horrible corporate look and horrendous dock icons

You know, I kind of like OS X in its default state. I've looked for different desktops, and changed a few icons, but I always end up changing them back again. To change it seems somehow...disloyal.

I run shapeshifter and use custom icons and backgrounds for a fairly different look.

I also set the selection colour to green, instead of blue.

I just like having something different to look at when I come home (my iMac at work is fairly unchanged).

UPDATE:

Ok, here's a pic:

Icons, themes, dock haxies, desktop image, edited the icons in Front Row, changed layout of the Safari window (using Interface Builder), and edited almost every OS X prompt.

It's mine.
