I bought an imac last year after using PCs most of my life. I know that Windows users have to perform routine maintenance like defragmenting to optimize their system’s performance. Is there an equivalent to defragmenting on OS X? Is there any routine maintenance needed for OS X users?
Thank you.

Macs take care of themselves. They do the optimizing behind your back.

But, if things go awry, or if you feel you're not getting the most out of your Mac, get MenuBar, MacJanitor or Onyx. You'll find all three in Google.

There is no need to perform defragmenting of Mac OS X disks unless you disk is nearly completely full. Mac OS X does file level degragmenting on the fly, which pretty much eliminates the issue. Here is the full scoop from Apple themselves:

By the way, on the topic of maintenance, you should see this:

http://www.unsanity.org/archives/000410.php

on the urban myth of repairing permissions. Most of the existing maintenance tools will perform this step, but especially for new switchers, with no Mac Classic software around, it is pretty much unecessary.

For a (slightly) more humourous take on this, see my write up of the same issue in my "Linux to Mac Switcher's Guide", in the "Care and Feeding of Your Mac" section. My guide can be found here (and you don't need to know anything about Linux to enjoy this particular section!):

This is just by way of noting that you don't have to do ALL of the maintenance offerings in these tools to keep your Mac in tip-top shape.
