Hello,
just signed up on board, for this question.

i have a imac g3 500 mhz snow edition and im putting 10.3 osx on it but i have noticed that it takes a long time to open apps. and such you can here the hard drive making noise and i have a 28 gb hard drive so its should have plenty of empty space.

I hooked up my old imac g3 333 and it is alot faster.

can anyone tell me what is happening? oh and i have 256 mb of ram

Its possible that one the latter drive is newer. The second one could be a 7200Rpm drive running on a faster cable.

Or the 1st one could just be about to die?

ok, let me try this again , i'm at work so i was rushing the first time i wrote this.

my g3 500mhz has 256 RAM, 28 gig hard drive and i have installed osx 10.3 on it. now it crawls like a turtle when i use it ( very slow ) i can here the hard drive raeding the info but it takes awhile.

i have a old imac g3 333mhz with a 6 gig hard drive that is reached its capacity, but i have the same system on both and the old mac is faster
and the hard drive doesnt make that clicking, scretching, or reading sound
it just opens right up when i click on something.

so does it sound like my hard drive in my g3 500 is dying ?

thanks for the response

How much RAM is in the G3 333Mhz system? 256 Megs is a bit low for even 10.3. If not the RAM then it really sounds like a problem with the HDD on the 500Mhz iMac Snow. It might be dying.

I own a 333Mhz iMac G3 Grape. With Panther it's a bit slow but considering it's CPU speed and old 6GB drive it's not bad. It has 256Megs RAM which I plan on upgrading to the Max of 512 on that machine. Your 500Mhz can take 1GB if I am not mistaken.

Edit: Rman and I must have hit the save button the same time! :spook:

Since both machines have the same 256Megs RAM, the 500Mhz Snow should not be that slow in comparison to the 333. Is this a clean install of 10.3? Like I said, maybe the Hard Drive is having issues. Book with the Panther 10.3 CD in the drive and hold down C. When you get to the installer look at the menus on the top bar and run the Diagnostic utility there and see if it finds any problems.

Sounds like you wanna look into a new HD. Crunchy drives are signs of nothing good to come.

I'm going with RAM and/or HDD. Add more RAM to the 500MHz if you can, and replace the HDD and you should be fine.

I have an iMac G3 400MHz (It's the DV model) and it runs pretty good, but I did have to replace the hard drive in it.
