Just got a Mac pro. The problem edition as you can see.
3.0 with 4GB (from apple) ATI X1900 etc.

I have had nothing but problems with this machine yet.
The first I did is I took out the sys drive and replaced it with SE16 WD 500GB drive and added 3 more, since the machine is used for music production.

That same day we noticed that opening some audio files from the web (qt) our firewire interface (presonus) would stutter. So that happend a few times and we blissfully ignored this since we just droped 5 G's on this mac to replace our G5 power mac and G4.

Then today everything went wrong...the machine freezes after I hit sys drive and the finder window opens up, everything goes white and the sys does not respond. All of hd listed are gone. After a relaunch same things happen, you can drag a screen around that will leave 10000 of copies of the window on the screen.
My dock items disappear. Turn into white boxes...etc. Relaunching does not help since with in a minute same things start happening...
If you hit F12 ..the widgets show up half-assed and the screen does not go grey but it stays highlited with widgets on top of it.

So far this has been a nightmare. Third of our plug ins that are supposed to be UB do not load or are not recognized on the machine. Logic Pro works like its a beta version....and instead finishing a project I am trying to fix this machine...

Any idea whats going on???
Im thinking of reinstalling mac osx and starting over but I am not too happy about it.

Ofcourse I would like to fix this instead of having to go with apple care and be with out a machine for weeks since I know I will have to go out and get our G5 back...

What apps are avaiable out there (like mac janitor) for UB that I can run to see can some of this stuff be fixed or diagnosed...

I am zeroing secondery drve out and then I will reinstall everything...please help in the mean time...

My first thought ... re-install the drive that came with the machine (with OS X pre-loaded) and see if it works.

Yeah ...we zeroed that drive out allready. we never had problems with our macs before so we did not think that we will need it. I can get it and install osx on it again but...do you think a 500gb sys drive is a bad idea or...
I have read a few posts about peeps using the WD drives se16 and se12 and not having any problems.

I could be wrong but some of that you are seeing on the screen sure sounds like video card problems. Just a thought.

no, ppc should work. I have not had a single complaint about my Mac Pro, not one. I would take it to apple. If you have applecare they will get it working for free.

On the DVD install disk that came with your Mac, you should have the Hardware Test utility. You are talking about the Mac Pro, right? In this case, since it's an Intel-based Mac, insert the DVD that has the Hardware Test on it and restart holding down the D key. Run the Extended Test. It will check for every hardware component in your MP.

Installed OS X again on the 500 gig hard drive and the system pretty much started freezing up right away. As soon as it booted for the first time I hit spotlight but the spotlight bar never showed up but it stayed highlighted.

I put in the original HD from seagate and put os x on it again but same thing again. The machine is laggy and freezes up more then my old 98 machine.

called apple and they are sending me a new machine and I am sending this one back.

I need to figure out if any body out there is using the western digitals se16 500gb with the mac pro since i dont know if they something to do with this...

thanks for your help

thanks for your help

I have a close friend with a Mac Pro and I am pretty sure one of his drives is a 500MB WD. I will ask him and get back to you. He has had no issues and has 4 drives in the machine.

Sounds like you got a defective machine.

I dont't know I am looking at forum posts and review and it seems people have same share of problems with seagates and hitachi's. I don't know if I will keep these or return them to the store.
My old WD250 in my G5 never let me down..yet lol.

I heard that are problems with ATI card's and cdertain monitor's try changing the display if possible. But Apple is sending you a new machine so you have to wait and see. If it happends again it must be a conflict with the display and the video card.
