PLS HELP: formatting NTFS --> HFS

i just bought a external hard drive which was sold as compatible for both mac & PC, however it is pre-formatted NTFS

last night i tried to run disk utility partitions to convert to HFS+ Journaled, but the process seemed to come to a stop. it had not progressed at all when i woke up the next day.

any tips would be very helpful. i am sure someone has succeeded at this, and i'd really appreciate some help. searched the web for a while, cant find quite what i am looking for. thanks!

oh..i have an iBook g4 running os 10.3

do you have the install cd's? boot from them, and try to do it
