• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I recently had all my old VHS videos put on DVD, one tape/disk, leaving a lot of unrecordrd space. I want to edit these onto fewer DVDs but I don' know where to start. I've spent a lot of time reviewing various web sites and I'm more confused than ever. It looks like I have to convert DVD format to something iDVD can work with for editing. Have a Titanium G4 1.25 GHz with superdrive. Would greatly appreciate any advice.

Check out this thread. I asked a similar question not too long ago, except my DVDs were converted 16mm home movies from the 50s & 60s.

My DVDs have some sort of encryption on them and handbrake didn't work, but maybe you'll have more luck. I was able to rip a commercial DVD with handbrake however.

Thanks

Thanks for the tip. I'm going there now. Some of my stuff was originally on film but I had it transferred to VHS 15 years ago.

Are you getting the "no valid title found" message? That's what I'm getting from Handbrake. I tried Mac the Ripper to see if I can rip the DVD and remove the encryption stuff, but couldn't get that to work either. If you find a solution post it!

Progress?

Strange things are happening. After reading your post I opened handbrake again to check the message it was giving me. The DVD with one of the files I wanted to convert happened to be in the drive. Handbrake detected it automatically. MP4 was in the destination window. Without changing anything I hit "Rip". (Kind of counterintuitive since it implies burning a disk).
It was a small file and took about 8 minutes. I ended up with an MP4 file on my desktop which iDVD opened. A miracle. I did a screen shot of the Handbrake window which I'll send to you if you send me your eMail address. I've tried to attach it to this post but I don't know if it will work.
