Will the iMac take 3" CDs ok? I have a very expensive box set from Japan and I'm not sure if I want to try the mini CDs in there or not.

it will not take them. You will need to go and buy a tray loading external drive.

As PBG4 said, no. You shouldn't use the "mini" cds with any slot loading optical drive. The internal mechanism isn't long enough to properly eject them, and might not even be able to properly load them, so they will become a permanent fixture inside your drive.

Here's hoping they will take the smaller discs in the future. Nintendo's got it sussed with the Wii being able to play Gamecube discs in a slot-loading drive.
