G'day Evermore and welcome to Mac-Forums.

I suggest you download this and run it, then reboot and see if things improve.

OnyX is a maintenance, optimization, and personalization utility for Mac OS X. It allows you to run miscellaneous tasks of system maintenance, to configure certain hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock, Safari, Dashboard, Exposé, Disk Utility... to delete cache, to remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome, to see the detailed info of your configuration, to preview the different logs and CrashReporter reports, and more.

If you're still experiencing MM (Mac Moodiness), please post back here.

OnyX is pretty comprehensive, but I like MacJanitor which allows you to force what would normally be daily, weekly or monthly optimization and maintenance. This maintenance would occur in the dead of night if your computer was switched on. But in general, your laptop probably spends that time powered off. With MacJanitor you can easily force that maintenance at a time that suits you.

Check it out, it's free:

Here is one more - similar to MacJanitor - Maintidget, which runs as a Dashboard widget. show you last time maintenance scripts were run and single click to run them all at once. Also free:
