• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

When I rip a DVD using handbrake it rips into a mpeg4 format. then when it's down i use toast to burn the dvd, but when i start to burn the dvd, toast tells me that i need 5.5 gb in order to burn the dvd. am i doing something wrong or should i use another program to rip it in a different format?

Sounds like you need to increase the compression of the MPEG4 file. The total size should not exceed about 4.3GB for a single layer disk.

Handbrake has all the options you need (assuming you are using the full Handbrake and not Instant Handbrake). If you use the 'target size' option you can just set it to 4GB and it'll calculate the bit rate automatically to make it fit.
