Hi!

I'm currently a PC user, looking to invest in a MACbook Pro. I'm a documentary filmmaker, and have been editting on fancy Macs that dont belong to me for the past few years, but now am not in such a lucky position.

I'm looking to buy a MAcbook pro, and have found that I can get the outdated model with the Intel Core Duo 1 chip for about 1500, whereas the new model, Core Duo 2 is about 1999. Is it worth it to spend the extra 500 for my purposes? Should I wait until a new model comes out with more memory or something, then get the Core Duo 2 if its really that great?

Thanks!

i have seen the baseline c2d in the refurb section for 1600$.

id go with that once its back. you get more ram, bigger HD, and of course, cooling issues fixed.

oh and a 2.16 vs a 2.0cd

i saw them in there last week, theyll be there again soon

Core2Duo's are also 64 bit which will be useful in leopard

If I were you, I would go for the high end Core Duo to get the 256 megs of video memory....assuming you cannot afford the high end video card.

Having been faced with the same choice, I went for the original CoreDuo, but bulked up on RAM (2GB). I still have the good video card (radeon x1600) and the machine flies with the extra RAM.

The benchmark data that I have seen suggests that there is a modest performance improvement with the C2D chip, but for $500 I was not personally convinced it was worth it.

The modest performance will become a pretty sizeable improvement one Leopard is released though

what do you intend to do with the machine?

The C2D has better RAM, they are faster with longer pipe lines and 64bit. Also it has a better wireless card. Go with the C2D as it is a better machine, in no large way. But many small ways making the machine much better.

Intended Use

I'm a bit confused about the Refurb computer mentioned.. its running at 1600? I can get the C1D for about that also..

I plan to use the computer mostly for editting video on Final Cut

as of today, there are -0- 15" pros in the refurb section. watch it day by day.

last time i saw the c2d 15" 2.13 in there, it was 1600$. i know this because i just bought a new one for 1880$ and it was 280$ cheaper, i just didnt wanna wait.

the cDuo base 15" should be about 1350, if its even back in there again.

just wait, and be ready, once you see one, buy.

id still go with the c2d for 1600, its a much nicer steal.

future proofing the c2d

there is about a %5-%15 performance increase from CD to C2D pending what benchmark is / was used.
