Wireless hard drive storage?

I saw at best buy that they have a wireless external hard drive enclosure for $120. Can I use this with my macbook pro on a wireless network (Verizon FIOS router)?

I have a seagate 160gb external drive that I would like to take the drive out of and put into the external wireless case.

Will I have to reformat for the mac to write to the drive?

I have been doing lots of research into networkable storage recently. Not very straightforward for us Mac users.

You may want to check out the details for the system on the Dlink website before buying.

Dlink do not explicitly say that it will work with Macs - I know for example that the Netgear equivalent (SC1010) although wired does not work either.

Suggest speaking to their support people.

It is also worth knowing what file system the enclosure would use. Most use FAT32 for compatibility, but this has a single file limit of 4gb on it which may not be convenient.

(Update: this system supports EXT2 and EXT3 which should be ok for the mac)

Your HDD should be ok as long as it is ATA/IDE up to ATA133 (NOTE: not ATA150). Again check their site for HDD compatibility.

Personally I would go with a wired solution - ironically also by Dlink. They do a dual SATA system (DNS323) which looks really good. However their website product page and their 'helpful' leaflet on Mac compatibility differ on whether this will actually work with OS X!

The new Airport Extreme seems like a nice possibility:

I read that it only has a USB port for printers, and doesn't give an IP address for a drive.

The USB port is printers or HD. Check out the link I posted.

You don't need an IP address since it uses Bonjour which is also available for Windows.

You can even hook a hub up to the USB port for multiple devices.
