Hi everyone,

I am looking at purchasing a 1.67ghz PB with 1gb ram, superdrive, 15" screen.
Asking price is $750.
I also saw one for $500 on Craiglist, but the seller has not responded to emails yet and it's about 400 miles from me!
So, what do you think about 750?
Thank you!

$750 is a great deal.. they go for a lot more on ebay.. you may want to check into that price and unit a bit more to make sure there is nothing wrong with it.. $750 would make me wonder if it was a scam. just my opinion

Yea that is a great price, I bought my g4 powerbook 1.33ghz 1 gig ram and 80gig hd for $880 of ebay, it was in very great condition. The one you are looking at is even a little bit faster but mine came with a lot of programs like photoshop and flash package. I would stick with that one other than the cheper one.

That is a great price. The one for $500 is likely a scam. There have been several people on CL selling 1.67GHz G4 15" Powerbooks for $500-600 for a while now. They will probably send you an e-mail in a few days about how to log into a website that will steal all your personal information if you give it to them. ;)

Got it!

Well, I went and picked it up tonight. I kind of hemmed and hawed about getting it because things are kind of tight right now and I really do not "need" another laptop. ((I've been using XP on my desktop and Debian on my older ThinkPad, and besides the burnt out usb on the TP things are running pretty smoothly. But I caught the Mac bug over the last 2 weeks.)) I'll just go look at it (I thought) and then when I saw it--well, how could I say no? So I bought it and I'm glad!

Speaking of scams, I saw an auction (yahooauctions) for another 1.67ghz PB and the guy had a buy it now price of $600 w/free shipping. I had to check it out of course. I emailed the seller with questions (is it really brand new, why does the box show an ibook, where did you get it, etc.) Here's his email back to me:

needless to say...

I suppose the deal I got was pretty close to being too good to be true,
but the seller was motivated as he is leaving for Brazil tomorrow morning for college.
He's a very nice guy (he was originally asking $800 and dropped it to $750 for me--dang budgets!) He had replaced it the PB with a PowerMac because he has to be able to run Windows for school. Anyway, this was no scam and the PB is in great shape.
Thanks again for all your input!

Wow, coming from Brazil I definitely would have run away from it, but for $750 that's quite a deal!

I believe the majority of ebay scams in the US are those which list their location as brazil, wether they are actually there or not. In europe, its nigeria. It must be some laws those countries have which are more lax than those in the US or europe in regard to ebay stuff.
