.Avi vs QuickTime

I see a lot of members asking about .avi files, how to view them, convert them, etc.

I was wondering: is the .avi codec better than anything QuickTime or is it simply because Windows dominates the market share or what is it exactly?

Its really not that good of a codec its just very common.

H.264 is better. AVI just happens to be that codec those hackers began using when ripping illegal videos. It kinda stuck.
