How do I format an external HD so Mac can write to it?

Love my new PB 17-incher, but I can't write to an external firewire drive that is formatted in NTFS. I can read no problem. Obviously I need to format it in someway (right?), but I'm not sure how to go about this. There is no "format" option when I right click the HD's icon or anywhere in the menu. So could somebody tell me what to do? Thanks very much.
