Copy DVD movie to external hardrive

I have a Macbook 1.8 13" with 60 gig and 2 gig of ram, I know I don't have a DVD super drive on my mac; my question is I have a few movies on regular DVD R and I would like to copies these movies to an external hard drive; can I do this with what I have on my regular macbook or do I need to have the DVD super drive in order to copies these DVD.

huh? im confused but yeah you can copy a dvd to an external hard drive easily you might have to copy it to your macbook first but yeah...

as long as the drive can read dvds you can copy data off of it.
