How to change the screen capture output format in Panther?

By screen capture, I mean of course the method using Cmd Shift 3 and its variants.

(The default output format on 10.3 is PDF.)

I read from this page:

http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/macosx10_4_1/topic3075.html

"To change the file format of the screencapture feature in OS X 10.4, use the following command line command:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type pdf

You need to log out and back in for the change to take effect."

(and you can change "pdf" with png, jpg, etc. etc.)

On that same page, near the top, another person says:

"With Panther, there was a Terminal-based method of changing the default format, but we tried it on Tiger, and it doesn't work."

I've looked around but all I can find is the Tiger method.

Is there really a Terminal-based method for Panther?

Thanks in advance!

Im not sure of a solution, but can you use the 'Grab' utility until you find one?

Yeah, I know about Grab,
but I'd still like Cmd Shift 3 to output as PNG in Panther, if that's possible.

I can still manage with PDF though;
I do know how to change a PDF into a PNG.
(heck, you can even just use Preview)

But if there is a way to have the screen capture output be PNG by default, that'd be great.
Wouldn't need that extra step to convert it.

This is mostly because on that webpage, that person said, "With Panther, there was a Terminal-based method of changing the default format"

Unless he was wrong?

@eric

Panther has been out for years. I believe you're thinking of Leopard...

Onyx the maintnence utility has a tab in it that lets you change it. Its under the Parameters then general tab. And Onyx is free if you dont have it already.

Thanks for telling me about Onyx.

But I think you're using a newer version.

Because I just installed the version for Panther, and it does not have this option.
(And the "Parameters" section is actually called the "Appearance" in my version.)

I suspect this was added for the Tiger version,
because on Titanium Software's site, where you can get Onyx, there is also an app called Deeper.

You can see on Deeper's page the screen capture preference that you mentioned:

I found a shareware program that would fit the bill, I think. Stick Software's Constrictor 2.3, the version 3.x is only for Tiger. You can still download and register version 2.3.
