Dorm internet problems

This has been going on for a while now but it seems when I connect to the internet without a router my internet is extremely laggy, slow, and seems to disconnect a lot. When I connect through my wireless router I never get any of these problems. I forgot my wireless router at home. I was wondering if there was some kind of setting or program that can help with this program?

Have you got some third party firewall running? Perhaps it is blocking the connection.

no there is no third party connection, I also get glined from IRC sometimes
