getting music from old HD ->iTunes

just made the switch a few days ago and I'm trying to get all my music from my external HD into my itunes library.

I tried to import the folder from iTunes, but it will only let me do it song by song

Then I opened the folder in the HD and dragged it into itunes, but that copied all my music to my mac HD, which is what I don't want, since I have about 90GB of music that I don't want on my mac HD and want on my external HD.

How can I keep the music files on my external HD but still add them to my itunes library

Your Mac's Specs
MacBook Pro | iMac(2.1 G5) | MacBook(2.16 C2D) | MacMini (1.67 CD) | iPhone 4 | iPad (3rd Gen)
Open iTunes
Goto Preferences > Advanced
Change the iTunes Music folder location to the folder in your external HD
