• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I encode dv and hdv video content on an xp pro machine, i have yet to purchase a mac desktop but have heard that clustering the machines can work well with encoding large amounts of video (raw avi, dv stream) to other formats (.mov, .wmv, .mpeg)

does anyone have any tutorials on setting this up, or benchmarks to look at? For example, if a 10 hour encoding code on one macpro was spread out to a cluster of 5, would it be cone 5x faster, or only 2x? I need more hard data if anyone has experience or can point me in the right direction I'd really like to know before spending $15k on a group of machines.

Thanks :)

I use a powermac and I am considering setting up a permanent cluster for use with video editing, I can tell you that there is a significant difference although I don't know how much difference because I use a macbook pro, quad, macbook, and powerbook as my cluster i do not yet have servers in the cluster.
