Keyboard & Mouse settings

So i just bought my macbook today. And the first thing i noticed is that when you go to system prefrences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard tab and i had a check mark in the box "use the f1 - f12 key..." when this is checked.. whenever i pressed these keys : "j k l u i o m" i would get numbers instead.. and then my delete keys dont work with this settings. Is that normal?

Another very random question is that: does the apple remote require batteries?
