word documents

is there a program on the mac which will allow me to open word documents (from a pc), edit them (on a mac), and then open them again on a pc?

Yep. Microsoft Office for mac.

It comes with Microsoft Word and can edit them just like Word on a PC can.

Apple's Pages can also edit and export files in word's .doc format, but I'd recommend Office if you're going to working with a lot of word files.

well its not really a lot it will just be for school work. is there any free programs that can do this as i'm not really up for spending £319 on something just for transferring documents

edit: open office is for me.

i can now get a mac knowing that i can still use all my documents

Actually office is quite affordable for students... around 129$ I think...

But check out NeoOffice instead - it's basically OpenOffice with a more mac like interface.

yea it does look better. im pretty much sure im allowed to get an imac. it looks like im getting the 17 inch one with the 1gb ram

If you're just going to use word-documents, AbiWord may be the way to go. I found NeoOffice, though more mac-like than OpenOffice, a bit clunky.
