Movie playing newb question

I have recently bought a Mac for use at school along with some other things, and I was wondering since my Mac doesn't play WMV files, is there a program I can use to make it play WMV files? Or am I just stuck to AVI files?

A friend told me to get VLC but that didn't do much for me.
