Hello everyone. I was sitting in the tech room (in this situation it's a good thing I work for computer services at my school, otherwise they'd probably think that I'm doing something malicious) when the network admin came up to me asking "Isn't your computer's name Lappy486?"
Me- "Yeah"
Admin - "It says your computer tried to log into the domain server as 'guest'"
Me- "Uh...sweet?"
Admin - "No, now I have a reason to say Mac's are stupid and unsecured, your computer must be being used by someone else to hack the network1!11!!"
Me- "That's really unlikely, I bet my mac is just somehow detecting the domain and trying to pair with it because Mac's are sweet and like to go out and do such things automatically"
Admin - "pshh"

Our domain is using Windows Server 2003 and when we checked the logs one other mac on the network was shown to do the exact same thing, attempt to authenticate with the domain as a guest. I'm sure someone knows what I'm talking about.

There's all sorts of anti-mac distrust floating around in our department now, someone save me from what I used to be: an ignorant Windows user.

Well when ever you connect any Computer Device it's default settings are normally set to automatically to configure to the network.

Tell him to get rid of his hatred for OSX and Macs. I have had Windows XP laptops do the same basic thing.

Macs are Stupid and Unsecured? Tell him to come here and fix the P4 laptop that I am working on with Windows Explorer trying to go to address's on the net and over 1000 Virus's leave alone all the Malware and spyware I got rid of and then tell me OSX is unsecured and unsafe and stupid. He is an Hater of Apple just like the Mac users who bash Windows XP in an Unfair way. Both are bad.

I agree that all computers associate with a network automatically. All computers do not immediately associate with domain controllers (at least, not on the windows side which is the only o/s i can say i have advanced knowledge in). On our network it isn't even necessary to be a part of the domain. None of the students' personal computers on campus are part of the domain, we generally only associate computers to it if they are faculty/staff/work study machines. The log does clearly state that a computer with the name "Lappy486" (my machine) attempted (and failed) to log into the domain with the username "Guest". Our domain doesn't allow that user to log on, so it naturally kicked it back and logged the failure. As far as I know I did not initiate any of this.

I'm a network admin and i had a user who had a Powerbook (i believe) running OS X (not sure what version) and i never had a problem with his computer. I never saw anything in the logs where it was trying to connect to the domain as a guest. The biggest problem we had with his machine was one day we were looking at our DHCP leases on the server and saw a weird computername (with lowercase and capital latters like a hacker) that was given a lease that didnt have our domain extension (computername.domainname.com). We found out it was his and we were ok with it.

I can try to bring my wifes Macbook with me to work monday and look at our domain controller to see if it tries to connect. we have a windows 2000 server so im not sure if that will make a difference. I dont see why it would initiate unless some service was turned on on the Mac to auto discover domains and try to log on as guest. If no one has an answer over the weekend i will try to test it out on monday (given that my wife will let me borrow her Mac)

If he is so concerned about the network security why doesn't he simply disable guest login?

Guest login is disabled, I'm just concerned because my laptop is doing something erratic. It's funny because I've had this laptop since before the semester began, I don't think it's ever happened before (then again we could have just missed it). Alucard, my assumption is similar to yours. Something built in to OS X is seeking out visible domains and attempting to connect to them. I checked the console and system logs and couldn't find anything pertaining to a domain. The only strange thing I found during the approximate period of time that this occurred was

Nov 3 09:50:48 lappy486 launchproxy[324]: /usr/sbin/smbd: getnameinfo(): Non-recoverable failure in name resolution
Nov 3 09:50:48 lappy486 launchproxy[324]: /usr/sbin/smbd: getnameinfo(): Non-recoverable failure in name resolution

I don't know what most of this means. Perhaps I'll just paste the entire log during the 15 minutes or so that it occurred.

Unfortunately i'm still learning OS X and unix but a couple things stood out in the log you posted. I understand most of it but since the unix services are different then Windows i may be a little off. now i may be on the wrong path but check this:

lookupd, is the daemon process through which all programs on the system request information about users and other machines on the network.

the log also said something about parallels. are you running XP within the Mac OS X?

The failuer in name resolution could be anything from DNS to it being unable to resolve a computer name to an IP.

Most important, do this: Launch the application Directory Access in the folder Utilities in Applications. When the box opens see if your Active Directory services area is checked. If it is highlight it and select configure and see if it has your domain in there. Then go to the authentication tab and see if your domain is listed. i noticed the /System/Library/StartupItems/AuthServer part in your log. not sure exactly what that is but it may be part of the Active Directory services.

lookupd from apple. goodArticle

I was running Parallels with WindowsXP earlier, but I have since uninstalled it (although I guess it wasn't completely uninstalled). I checked on the Active Directory service, it wasn't even checked. Inside there is nothing regarding our domain here at Ferrum. The information you've supplied on lookupd is very interesting. I'm still suspicious though. It's one thing if the computer requests information about others on the network, it's another if it finds the ferrum.edu domain, decides to pick an account name "guest" with no password, and then attempts to join. Doesn't that strike you as a little to "reachy outty"? I'm also perplexed since one other Mac on campus (a school owned mac being used in the Public Relations Department) seems to have done the same thing at a very close time to this event. I know that there are other macs on campus (both school and student owned), this is really weird and disappointing because it's just adding fuel to the anti-mac fire.

If the right services are setup anything is possible :) I will try and do some more digging to see what i can find. Its a good learning experiance for me as well. The answer has to be somewhere :) Have you ever connected to a domain using your Mac?

It might not be trying to guess a name at all. Windows network servers can be configured to map 'anonymous' attempts to a specific local user. If the mac is just using Bonjour (a.k.a. Rendezvous) to scout out shares, the domain controller may just be mapping the anonymous browse attempt as a 'guest' login attempt and log that. Put simply - it's most likely the admin throwing a wobbler because he doesn't precisely understand what's going on.

I had an idea that Bonjour was a player in this issue. It makes sense that it would be out in the network looking for anything and everything shared. If Windows really would record this as an attempted logon via "Guest", I'd love to be able to duplicate it or at least find other people with the same issue.

Very good point. I am not that familiar with bonjour but from what i have read it could possibly be the one trying to link up to the network.

Does Bonjour really deal with domains? I was under the impression it simply searched all of the computers by subnet, by IP only. I didn't know it even had the functionality to deal with computers in the sense of what domain the belonged to.

Perhaps your Mac really isn't trying to connect to a domain but maybe trying to connect with any computer using the guest account. It may be showing up on the domain since the logs record that info?

I'm trying to get my wifes Macbook to try out tomorrow but it isnt looking good since she may need it. If she does i will try again later on in the week.

AFAIK, it browses Windows networks the same way as a Windows computer would using the SMB protocol, courtesy of Samba.
