For any one that has a macbook, is there any way to adjust the settings so that the computer does not go to sleep when you shut the display? thanks a lot

Go to System Preferences, then Energy Saver, under the Sleep tab, change it to whatever you want, move the slide all the way to the right to have it never sleep. Keep in mind that the settings are different for running off of the battery or the power adapter. You can change those settings in the same window too.

You can only use it closed when you have an external display, mouse & keyboard connected.

Connect your peripherals, close the macbook and then tap the mouse or keyboard to wake it up again.

There is also a utility to prevent sleeping, but 10.4.8 seems to interfere with it, so you'll have to wait for an update if you really need to use it closed without accessories plugged in:
