I like to minimize the use of my mouse/trackpad as much as possible so naturally I use command+back and command+forward when browsing the internet on Firefox. However, if the cursor is in a box, these commands don't work. I find that a little annoying, is there a fix besides clicking outside the box?

Try using the shift+command+[ or ] key combo. This works in Safari if you have tabbed browsing enabled and have open tabs and want to switch between them but I don't know about FireFox. Have you tried using the Tab key as well?

You could try hitting tab to get the cursor out of the box, then the command + forward/back should work, assuming you don't tab into another box.
