Just curious if a desktop host computer is needed with the base unit. I live in the sticks and have to use a dial up ISP so is the connection dialed thru the laptop to the modem in the base? Can the base be used as a stand alone unit? Thank you.

I can't follow your question. You can use an Extreme Basestation as a wireless router connecting to the internet through its modem to your dial-up account. You can then connect your wireless computers and your cabled computers and enjoy the slowness. You do not need a dedicated computer to control the Basestation.

On the other hand, you can skip the Basestation and set up a dedicated computer to use it's modem to connect to your dial-up. Then, through System Preferences --> Sharing allow another wireless computer to share that internet connection. That of course is even worse, the dedicated machine can't go to sleep and you are doing the routing through the dedicated machine in software. So your connection will be even slower and less reliable.
