Need help with house cleaning

What is a good way to clean out all the junk in my G4 dual programs. I ran Cocktail but it seemed to be stuck on disk permissions. I never finished, even the next day so I used force quit. I don't know what can or can't be deleted. I just want to do some house cleaning to keep everything running smoothly. I have noticed quite a few times that I have programs crashing such as mail, indesign, illustrator, safari.

Any help would be appreciated and hopefully if someone directs me with a link, the place they are sending me to isn't too technical.

have you tried a program called macjanitor?
