Sharing a folder on a macbook over the network

Hello,

I thought I would post this here first because I am very new to mac.

What I want to do:
be logged in as me
share a folder over the network (I can't seem to specify a specific folder)
have people access the folder using a user/pass other than mine.

The problem I'm getting:
I can only seem to share the "shared" folder
I am used to being able to share folders with samba in linux, but it doesn't seem to work here.
when people log on with a different user/pass they can't see the folder's that I want to share.

Now it seems really hard to share a folder, which should be really simple with an os that has the power of freebsd behind it. It's something that I've taken for granted I guess when using windows and linux.

Thanks for your help
Adam

smb.conf

Can anyone post a sample smb.conf file that works, so I can try that?

Thanks

G'day Adam, welcome to Mac-Forums!

Apple have an article on their website regarding sharing more than the share folder:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106224

I'm no networking guru but is this what you're after:

I checked out the link at apple about file sharing and all it suggests is to upgrade to os X server edition, for $499.99. Ya right!

if you go into your terminal and change directory to /etc
within that folder there is a file called smb.conf
I am looking for the etire contents of that file.
You can type:
>cat /etc/smb.conf
from anywhere in the terminal and it should spit out the contents. I'm thinking that mine might be screwed up.

Thanks again.
