Special Characters?

Hi,

I'll try to explain as best as I can.

In windows when I need special characters which include accents, cedilla, etc. I would hold down ALT then put in the appropriate ASCII codes using the number keypad.

How do I accomplish this in 10.4.8 using my MBP ?

I ask because I would like to stop having to go to my PC every time I am typing something in French.
