External HD's

I have been using a western digital external harddrive now for about 10 months. I use the drive on my powerbook and on my windows machine.
I have never had any problems, But now the drive will read with my mac only
on the 1st attempt and even after that sometimes it will just stop.
With the windows machine it reads perfect.
Has any else had this problem?
I have been looking to buy a new drive and only use it with my mac. Can anyone comment on a external harddrive that they have had a good experience with.
I feel that the switching back and forth has screwed my drive up.
